The Story Of How Prince Harry And Meghan Markle Met Will Actually Melt Your Heart

Newly-engaged pair Meghan Markle and Prince Harry seem happy and very much in love and all of that, but however evident their mutual adoration, questions about their union remain: namely, how did they even meet?

After all, as a member of the British royal family, Harry, 33, enjoys considerable international fame. But, as an American actress best know for her role on the USA Network drama Suits, Meghan, 36, occupies a different celebrity realm. Which is not to shade Meghan at all; merely to say they would seem to run in separate circles.

Except, according to E! News, they share one very strategic mutual friend: Violet von Westenholz, a friend of Harry’s since childhood whose public relations work with Ralph Lauren led to her connection with Meghan. Apparently, Harry had been venting to Violet about his dating difficulties (how in the hell do you meet someone when you’re a prince?!), and when Violet befriended Meghan, she saw match potential.

“Meghan had been a part of the London social scene for a while and had slotted into the high society set really easily,” a “well-placed source” told E! “And so when Harry told Violet he was having trouble finding someone, Violet said she might just have the perfect girl for him.”

The fact that Meghan and Harry had been introduced by a “secret friend” is not news: In their first post-engagement interview, Harry admitted to the BBC that their first date had been a blind set-up—and that, when he walked into the room for their first date back in July 2016, he immediately thought, “Okay, well, I’m really gonna have to up my game!” Neither knew much about the other, Meghan added, “So for both of us, it was just a really authentic and organic way to get to know each other.” The pair went on two, back-to-back dates before jetting off to Botswana together for a week, and in November 2017, got engaged over a roast chicken.

According to E!, speculation about who exactly arranged the union has swirled since, with many people guessing that stylist Jessica Mulroney (who works with such notable names as Sophie Trudeau—Canadian prime minister  Justin Trudeau’s wife) introduced the couple, or fashion designer Misha Nonoo, or friend Markus Anderson. Not so, according to E!‘s anonymous sources. But while Violet has not confirmed the theory, unnamed friends told the network that the pair are thrilled to be getting married in May.

“Meghan really does come first for him. He’s honestly absolutely smitten,” a friend told E! “His friends love her too; she’s been a really good fit into the group.”

“We are all just really happy that he finally met a woman he wants to spend the rest of his life with,” said another.

Fancy British wedding hats off to Violet!
