A study conducted by CQUniversity has found that 64 per cent of people say sex helps them sleep better.
And don’t fret if you’re riding solo, 50 per cent of 460 adults surveyed said that a ménage à moi was just as effective. The only catch is that it has to result in an orgasm.
The Adelaide sleep researcher behind the study, Dr Michele Lastella, told Adelaide Now: “There’s strong evidence to suggest substituting screen time for play time.”
“When you’re engaging in sex, you’re not thinking about what to do the next day, you’re not going through your phones. It distracts you.”
There’s also some science to back up this link, OB/GYN Saralyn Mark told Women’s Health that it’s all to do with the hormone released during intercourse. She says that sex boosts the production of oxytocin (which helps with bonding) and decreases the production of cortisol (which induces stress). These fluctuations leave your body in a relaxed state, making it easier for you to nod off.
It also increases oestrogen levels in women, which a previous study review published in the Journal of Women’s Health found can enhance a woman’s REM cycle for a deeper sleep.
