Diabetes type 2 is a condition which pertains to rising blood sugars which plays havoc on the rest of the body. Much emphasis is placed on the types of food to be aware of particularly in the morning which could lay the groundwork for either healthy or unhealthy blood glucose levels. However, drinks are equally important.

For the healthiest breakfast drinks which will keep blood sugars stable, it includes:

  • Water
  • Unsweetened tea
  • Herbal tea
  • Unsweetened coffee
  • Low fat milk
  • Milk alternatives
  • Vegetable juices including beetroot or prune juice
  • Smoothies
  • Kombucha.

In a study published in the National Library of Health, tea consumption and long-term risk of type 2 diabetes was further analysed.

The study involved 482,425 diabetes-free participants and 30,300 diabetes patients both consuming tea.

In the diabetes-free population, 17,434 participants developed incident type 2 diabetes compared with participants who never consumed tea in the past year.

“Tea consumption was not associated with risk of macrovascular complications among patients with diabetes,” noted the study.

“With regard to tea consumed, the inverse associations between daily tea consumption and risks of type 2 diabetes and all-cause mortality in patients with diabetes were only observed among daily green tea drinkers.”

The study concluded that daily green tea consumption was associated with a lower risk of incident diabetes and a lower risk of all-cause mortality in patients with diabetes.

In addition, daily tea consumption was associated with a lower risk of diabetic microvascular complications, but not macrovascular complications.

Milk alternatives can include almond, oat, rice, soy or coconut milk which are dairy-free options low in carbs and calories.

They are also a good choice for type 2 diabetics as they are sometimes fortified with important nutrients such as calcium and vitamin D, both of which play a key role in bone health.

Be aware that soy and rice milk contain carbohydrates, and many nut milks contain a minimal amount of protein, so it’s important to check the packaging carefully to pick the right product for you.

For drinks to stay away from in the morning for type 2 diabetics the list includes:

  • Regular soda
  • Energy drinks that contain sugar
  • Fruit juices
  • Coffee or tea with a lot of added sugar.
