I am a 14 year old boy and I’ve had a girlfriend for 2 months. So far we’ve only kissed. Do we have to have sex?

Having sex is a very personal, individual thing. It can be fun and exciting but it can also be scary and upsetting, especially if you are not ready. Age 14 is young to be having sex, even in movies.  Most people aren’t ready for the possible physical and emotional consequences of having sex at age 14. It is also important to know that in some states, having sex with a girl under 15 is considered statutory rape (meaning it is illegal). The best thing to do is to wait until you feel you understand what having sex is, how having sex would affect you and your partner and make sure you both agree that you are ready.  This may not happen for a few years and some people even wait longer. If you do decide to have sex, there is a risk your partner could get pregnant or that one or both of you could get a sexually transmitted infection (STI). It’s important to talk to your partner about these risks BEFORE you have sex. There are many forms of birth control (also called “contraception”) available to help prevent pregnancy, such as the IUD, Implant, pill, patch, or ring. Condoms are the only way to prevent sexually transmitted infections.
