Migraine Sufferers Slam The "Migraine Pose" On Social Media

Anyone who has experienced a migraine – or even spoken to a sufferer of the often debilitating neurological disorder – knows that it’s no joking matter.

That’s why migraine sufferers have taken to social media to slam the latest trend in photogenic positioning – the “migraine pose” – for trivialising a serious medical condition. The pose, preferred by the likes of Bella Hadid and Kendall Jenner, involves placing your fingers or palm against your temple with a look that’s more sultry than suffering.

It gained attention last week after celebrity makeup artist Nam Vo spoke of its flattering benefits like tightening the face, emphasising cheekbones and highlighting manicures.

“I love it because the beauty of your hands frame the face and give it more structure. I always make my models pose this way,” she told Elle magazine.

Migraine sufferers have responded by posting images of their #TrueMigrainePoses, along with heartbreaking descriptions about how the pain has impacted their lives.

“So the pain that robs me of time with my family, of my ability to work, and to function is a fashion pose for you?! Migraines for 58 out of 60 days is debilitating, not fodder for fashion,” one user wrote.

“This is how I rocked the #migrainepose last year- hospital stay, tons of tests, radiation shot at my head, not being able to walk, slurring words. Super-sexy. Yet, I run a house, raise 3 kids, and keep my chin up. Don’t turn our pain into your beauty tips,” another commented.

Some labelled the term ‘disease shaming’, writing: “What’s next…Cancer Pose? Parkinson’s Pose? Diabetes Pose? Heart Disease Pose? Lupus Pose?”

Nam Vo has since apologised on Instagram.

“EDIT- Hi my Dewey Dumplings, my apologies. This wasn’t meant to be offensive or hurt anyone’s feelings. I am touched by the personal stories that you have all shared. I love all my Dumplings and want you all to be happy and healthy! Its all about the LOVE.”
