High blood pressure is a very common condition that affects more than a quarter of all adults in the UK – although huge numbers of people don’t even know they’re at risk. You could lower your chances of developing hypertension by adding more chia seeds to your diet.
High blood pressure is often known as ‘the silent killer’, because it rarely causes any noticeable symptoms.
You could lower your risk of the condition, which is also known as hypertension, but making a few changes to your daily lifestyle.
Exercise is crucial for avoiding high blood pressure, as well as some easy diet swaps.
However, one of the easiest ways to lower your chances of hypertension is to regularly eat chia seeds, it’s been claimed.
Chia seeds are an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids, fibre, protein, and antioxidant polyphenols.
Polyphenols have a beneficial impact on the liver, while also boosting circulation.
A large handful of chia seeds every day for three months could lower your blood pressure by 6/3mmHg, scientists have claimed.
You can eat chia seeds raw as a snack, or grind them down into a flour and sprinkle it over your food.

Nutritionist Dr Sarah Brewer wrote on her website, MyLowerBloodPressure.com: “Chia seed fibre, omega-3, and antioxidant polyphenols have beneficial effects on the liver and circulation that can lower blood pressure.
“Chia seeds also contain fibre, lignans, antioxidants, magnesium, calcium and potassium which together have an even more powerful effect against high blood pressure.
“Because of their high fibre content, eating too many chia seeds can lead to bloating and abdominal pain from trapped wind.
“Eat chia seeds in moderation, and always drink sufficient fluids to help them swell.”
If chia seeds aren’t your thing, you could still lower your blood pressure by eating more bananas, it’s been claimed.
Bananas are a great source of potassium, which is crucial in maintaining a normal blood pressure.
Potassium helps to regulate the amount of fluids in your body.
If there’s too much water in the body, the extra fluid in the blood puts extra pressure on the blood vessel walls.
High blood pressure is a very serious condition that increases the risk of some deadly complications.
It raises the risk of having a heart attack or a stroke, which is why it’s crucial to monitor your blood pressure if you have hypertension.
The condition puts extra stress on your blood vessels and vital organs.
It’s vital that if you’re worried about your blood pressure, you speak to a doctor as soon as possible.
