Around 122 scientists are urging ministers to reconsider their plans – a decision that will be finalised this upcoming Monday. The exponential growth of Covid is thought to leave “hundreds of thousands with long-term illness and disability”. The scientific community emphasises that “the link between infections and death might have been weakened, but it has not been broken”. Emphasis was made on the fact that “infection can still cause substantial morbidity in both acute and long-term illness”.

Fears revolve around Covid transmission in unvaccinated children and young people.

Taking the vaccine statistics into account, more than 17 million people will have “no protection” against the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

“This strategy risks creating a generation left with chronic health problems and disability,” the letter warned.

Furthermore, the guaranteed high rates of transmission “will lead to significant educational disruption”.

The scientists are in favour of vaccinating children ahead of the reopening of schools and universities in the autumn – after a summer that could create “a reservoir of infection”.

Another potential threat is the development of vaccine-resistant variants.

Based on preliminary modelling data, the government’s current strategy to scrap all Covid restrictions is “fertile ground” for such an eventuality to occur.

“This would place all at risk, including those already vaccinated, within the UK and globally,” the letter noted.
