Apple cider vinegar: Expert shares recipe for weight loss drink
Apple cider vinegar is made by mixing crushed apples with yeast and sugar and fermenting them to make alcohol. Acetobacter, a type of bacteria, is then added to produce acetic acid – the component that makes apple cider vinegar so useful. People swear by taking a shot of ACV every day, but can you drink apple cider vinegar straight? Express.co.uk chatted to Dr Deborah Lee from Dr Fox Online Pharmacy to find out.
Apple cider vinegar benefits
There hasn’t been much research into the use of apple cider vinegar, and the few studies which do exist are only small.
Dr Lee said: “Although ACV may have health benefits, much more research is required before we can be sure of this.
“There’s also no quick fix for health. Don’t rely solely on ACV. All those other factors such as eating healthily, and taking regular physical exercise, are the mainstay of good health.
“If you don’t get these right ACV is most unlikely to benefit your health.”

Apple cider vinegar has been studied in animals and humans and found to have various beneficial properties.
The vinegar is antibacterial, which means it can be used as a household clear and medicinal treatment.
Apple cider vinegar is an antioxidant which can neutralize free radicals.
Dr Lee explained: “Free radicals are produced every day as part of normal metabolism, but they cause DNA damage.
“They are associated with the development of heart disease, diabetes, and cancer.”
Apple cider vinegar can help you control your blood sugar levels, which is useful for everyone including diabetics.
Taking the vinegar daily can help you to keep blood lipids down and reduce plasma levels of cholesterol and triglycerides.
The vinegar may also prevent bone loss and improve bone mass and bone strength.
Dr Lee said apple cider vinegar may also help you to lose weight, as small, randomised, placebo-controlled, trials in humans have shown that taking ACV results in significantly greater weight loss than taking a placebo.

Can you drink apple cider vinegar straight?
No, you should not drink apple cider vinegar straight.
Dr Lee said: “Never drink vinegar neat – always dilute it. The recommendation is 15 ml to around one tablespoonful mixed into a large glass of water, twice a day.
“ACV is a powerful acid and can be corrosive for your oesophagus (throat). It can also damage tooth enamel.”
If you don’t like the unpleasant taste of this drink, you can take apple cider vinegar supplements or gummies.
Dr Lee said: “There seems to be no difference in the bioavailability between the capsules or the liquid.”
