Guys often complain that condoms don’t let them feel anything during sex. But if you’re convinced that wearing a condom sucks, it may be time to invest in a different type of condom, says sex therapist Ian Kerner, PhD, author of She Comes First: The Thinking Man’s Guide to Pleasuring a Woman.
According to Kerner, there are three factors every guy should consider when buying condoms:
1) Find a condom that fits like a glove.
A rubber that fits your penis is as important in maximizing pleasure as it is in protecting against sexually transmitted infections and pregnancy. Too-tight or loose condoms can tear, slide off, or cause guys to lose their erections, according to a 2015 study published in the journal Sexually Transmitted Infections.
Kerner advises guys to experiment by trying on different condom sizes. For a precise fit, measure the thickest part of your penis when erect. The most important measurement is girth, not length.
2) Look for ultra-thin rubbers.
Kerner says you should shop for condoms offered by reputable brands, like Trojan, which claim to be 20%-40% thinner than the average condom. Ultra-thin condoms protect against STIs and unwanted pregnancy, but they’ll also make you feel like there’s less material separating you from your partner.
3) Buy ribbed condoms.
Textured condoms satisfy your partner by increasing stimulation inside the vaginal wall. However, Kerner explains that textured condoms can feel pleasurable for you as well. “Those provide extra pleasure for you and your partner,” Kerner says.
