Winter is in full swing, meaning cold weather and shorter daylight hours. Is extreme tiredness getting you down and irritable? You could add some pizzazz into your life with the assistance of a nutritional therapist.
Natalie Lamb, Nutritional Therapist at Bio-Kult, recommends five supplements to feel energised.
1. B Vitamins
“B vitamins are essential for energy production in every cell in the body,” Lamb begins.
“As water-soluble vitamins, they are only present in the body for a short time after consumption of certain foods.

“Taking a B multivitamin will provide you with a good range of B vitamins, each with slightly varying benefits.”
2. Live bacterial supplements
Lamb comments how “an imbalanced gut microbial mix” can result in fatigue.
“A balanced gut microbiota is essential to help us gain nutrients from the food we eat,” she adds.
When the gut microbiota is unbalanced, the body uses up its energy trying to remove toxins created by unfavourable bacteria and yeast.
As more energy is expended on removing toxins, there’s a smaller resource of energy to pull from.
Lamb said: “I recommend Bio-Kult Advanced Multi-strain, a unique multi-strain live bacterial supplement with 14 strains of beneficial bacteria.
“Many people experience more energy and a sense of general well-being with regular bowel movements.”
3. Magnesium
Generally found in green, leafy vegetables, beans, nuts, seeds and brown rice, Lamb comments how the mineral “has a strong research base for confirming its benefits in the reduction of tiredness and fatigue”.
“Well-known for increasing sleep quality,” according to Lamb, she adds: “We use up a lot of magnesium during times of stress.”
For extra magnesium support, Lamb recommends a “magnesium citrate” supplement, which has been found “to be particularly effective”.
The UK Nutrient Reference Intake (RNI) for magnesium is 270mg/d for adult women and 300mg/d for an adult male.
4. Chromium
“If you find you reach for sugary snacks to keep you going throughout the day, you may be experiencing blood sugar imbalances,” says Lamb.

Continuing, she adds: “As we take in sugar, or refined carbohydrates, our blood glucose levels rise fairly rapidly and the body releases insulin to help carry the glucose through the body to the cells that need it most.
“Glucose is essential for energy production throughout the body, and particularly in the brain.
“Once used up we can experience a dip in energy as the body demands more sugar to start the cycle all over again.”
To disrupt this bad cycle, Lamb suggest taking a chromium supplement.
“Chromium supplementation has been reported to contribute to the maintenance of normal blood glucose levels, reduce carbohydrate cravings and to help regulate appetite,” Lamb says.
5.Iron
“Iron is an essential component of hundreds of proteins and enzymes that support essential biological functions in the body,” Lamb explains.
“Fatigue is a common sign of iron deficiency,” she adds, which is why Lamb advises for people low on energy to invest in iron supplements.
Lamb’s five supplement suggestions may just give you a new lease of life.
