Medical appointments, medication, being more active and eating a healthy, balanced diet – it can all seem daunting and overwhelming. One of the first questions is likely to be ‘what can I eat?’ For a type 2 diabetic the three main points to remember when it comes to food is lowering the carb intake, less salt and more fruits and vegetables, and a certain superfood smoothie ticks all those boxes.
The low-carb superfood smoothie has it all, antioxidants rich-berries, healthy fat from the avocados, greens and protein.
Not only is the smoothie delicious, but it is low in calories and will not wreak havoc on the blood sugar levels, you can even bump up the fibre by adding a table spoon of chia seeds.
The recipe is quick and easy and can be consumed any time of the day,remembering to opt for unsweetened yogurt or one that is low in sugar.
A 2013 study looked at fruit consumption and the risk of type 2 diabetes and found that a consumption of specific fruits such as blueberries, grapes, and apples, significantly lowered the risk of type 2 diabetes.
Smoothies can be a healthy part of a type 2 diabetic diet and using certain fruits are a great way to regulate blood sugar levels and can be consumed daily.
According to the American Diabetes Association, superfoods for type 2 diabetics are those that have e aloe-glycemic index rating and contain important nutrients, including fibre, calcium, potassium, magnesium and vitamins A, C and E.
Other fruits to be included in your smoothie routine:
- Green leafy vegetable smoothie with spinach and kale
- Berries, strawberries, blueberries and blackberries
- Citrus fruits including oranges and lemons
- Nuts and natural nut butters such as almonds or peanut butter
- Dairy including low-fat yogurts and milk
