The top 10 industries with the happiest workers

The saying goes that if you choose a job you love, you’ll never have to work a day in your life.

From the time you leave education, until you’re around 65-years-old, you’ll go to work pretty much every day – so it helps if you actually enjoy it.

But if you’re not feeling fulfilled, a new survey could be your inspiration for a career change.

Research by Reboot Online has revealed the industries with the happiest workers.

And who won the top spot? It turns out that those employed in the science and pharmaceuticals sectors are beaming from ear to ear, with a happiness score of a whopping 91.93%.

The overall happiness score was determined based on the response to seven factors: positive impact on others, career prospects, employee empowerment, work relationships, positive impact on mental health, salary and work culture.

Over 2,500 professionals were surveyed, aged 18 to 70, from 29 different industries.

Science and pharmaceuticals also had the highest satisfaction when it came to the individual factors of mental health benefits, job empowerment and salary.

Workers in the creative arts and design industry were the second happiest workers with a score of 83.81%, while environment and agriculture came in a close third with a score of 80.96%.

Charity and voluntary work had an overall score of 76.66% with many workers happy with the positive impact their job had on others.

However charity workers didn’t feel valued by their employers and their satisfaction with their salary and job empowerment were below 40%.

The research also uncovered the industries with the most unhappy workers.

The lowest overall happiness score belonged to energy and utilities, with less than 10% of workers being happy with their career.

Only 2.44% of the industry workers felt happy about how hey were valued and encouraged by their employer.

Sales had the second worst overall happiness score with only 10.49% of workers claiming to be happy.

The industry also scored the lowest for positive impact on others (7.14%) and mental health (8.75%).

The third most unhappy industry was call centre and customer service, with professionals in this field particularly unhappy about the workplace culture.

In fact, just 4% of workers were happy with it.

Shair Aharony, Reboot Online CEO, said: ‘It is really important to build an employee-first workplace culture as it fosters a sense of trust, positivity and opportunity for employees to take ownership of their work, voice ideas and participate in shared values.

‘Instead of continually overwhelming them with work, take the time to understand the way they work and how they want to develop in their role and then adjust for it.’
