Journalist Jenny Brockie, 64, shares her day on a plate.
Insight’s Jenny Brockie.
7.30am After a 30-minute walk, breakfast is a bowl of full-fat natural yoghurt with fresh passionfruit, blueberries and blackberries, plus a strong tea with a dash of milk.
8am Another cup of tea and a piece of sourdough toast with a boiled egg.
10am After arriving at the studio to start preparing for tonight's recording of Insight, another cup of tea.
1.30pm Lunch is a large bento box containing teriyaki salmon and chicken, spinach with sesame seeds, rice, endamame and salad. I also order six pieces of salmon sushi to have after the show. 4pm-6pm I have more tea before make-up.
10.30pm I wolf down the sushi and head home.
11pm I am still hungry but tired, so it's two pieces of multigrain toast with peanut butter before bed.
Dr Joanna McMillan says …
Top marks for… Starting the day with a nutritionally spot-on breakfast. Berries are rich in beneficial polyphenols, passionfruit is one of the most fibre-rich fruits, the yoghurt gives you a much-needed calcium boost for the day ahead and, along with the egg and toast, delivers both protein and low-GI carbs.
If you keep eating like this you'll… Potentially find yourself getting heartburn or indigestion during the night. Ideally, you want to leave at least two hours between eating and going to bed to allow time for your stomach to empty.
Why don't you try… Having a light meal in the late afternoon on the days when you are in the studio in the evening, so you are not ravenous after you've finished work. A delicious salad with tuna and beans, a big bowl of soup full of vegetables and legumes with wholegrain bread, or a buddha-style bowl with quinoa, vegies and some lean meat, would all be ideal.
Jenny Brockie is host of Insight, 8.30pm Tuesdays on SBS.
