Ministers said falling cases and jabs meant it was no longer needed for all staff and patients without symptoms.

New admissions to hospices or care homes will still be tested, as will patients with weak immune systems admitted to hospital.

Staff in the NHS, social care and prisons can also request tests if they have symptoms.

Health Secretary Steve Barclay said: “We will continue to closely monitor the situation.”

The UK Health Security Agency said infections were “low and decreasing”. Covid admissions are down 20 per cent week on week.
