The UK Government’s action plan to minimise the risks posed by coronavirus this autumn and winter have been revealed. A booster shot campaign will see millions offered either the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine. There are also tips you can follow at home to reduce your risk of Covid this winter, according to doctor Hilary.
Although it may seem counterintuitive, doctor hilary advised opening your window.
As he explained on ITV’s Lorraine, “the cold weather favours the virus”.
As a result, there is an increased risk of transmission as people huddle inside their homes.
Opening your window allows “plenty of ventilation”, thereby reducing the risk of particle transmission, said doctor Hilary.
The science behind why you should open up your windows is clear.
COVID-19 has been shown to spread through both droplet and airborne transmission.
Droplet transmission occurs when an infected individual coughs, sneezes or speaks, releasing large droplets into the air which deposit quickly, typically within two metres.
Airborne transmission occurs when smaller aerosols carrying a virus evaporate to form droplets which remain suspended in the air for long periods of time.
