If you’re going to trust anyone’s opinion on skincare, it’d be the woman who works her magic on the likes of Oprah Winfrey and Michelle Obama.
That woman is Jennifer Brodeur. She has over 20 years of experience in the industry and is the brains behind JB Skin Guru – a holistic line of organic skin care and services.
We had a chance to chat to the beauty boss at the recent International dermaviduals Symposium about the common mistakes we’re making when it comes to our faces and the biggest trends we’ll see in skincare this year.
What are the biggest skin care mistakes you see women making?
The biggest is over-exfoliating and stripping the skin. It can cause dryness, inflammation, excess oil, breakouts, redness, sensitivity, translucency, infection and even excess oil.
What are the benefits of facials? How often should we be having them?
This is a tricky question. As not all “facials are created equally”. For example, for facials you would benefit by having a course to have the cumulative effect, followed by treatments every 4-6 weeks.
However, some treatments which maybe more invasive would need to have more down time in between. This is where having a qualified therapist is key. After a complete skin assessment, she will be able to advise what the best course of treatment is for your skin.
What are the skin care products we should be using every day?
Cleanser, cleansing properly every night can make a huge difference. It’s the easiest, least expensive and honestly, most important.
Your skin is exposed to many different types of stressors throughout the day. Since your face is not covered by clothing, it is naturally open to receiving the most abuse from the outside world from a variety of sources such as UV exposure, arid or humid climates, harsh air conditioning or heating, cigarette smoke and other pollutants. To help protect the skin from environmental damage, it creates a moisture barrier of a waxy/oily substance called sebum. While sebum is beneficial to your skin, if it stays on the face too long without being cleaned it can mix with makeup, dirt, debris, sweat, etc. This may cause a blockage of skin follicles leading to acne, blotchy skin, irritation and overall unhealthy-looking skin.
Care should be put into how you wash your skin.
Morning cleansing may also be beneficial for some.
Moisturiser! We all need to moisturise.
What product or method do you think is overrated or unnecessary?
Masks. Don’t get me wrong they can be great. However, we need to read the labels. Some of the ingredients in the been so called “natural” ones scare me. So many fragrances and dyes in them, over time so many cause irritation.
What do you do when you notice a blemish or spot?
Let it run its course! Don’t touch or pick it. If it’s painful hot-water compresses with clean sterile gauze.
What do you think the biggest trend in skincare will be this year?
LED facials. Not the ones you buy for home use. However, all the LED talk is incredible because it’s starting the conversation. More and more we will see a change in direction for cleaner products that offer results used in synergy with non-invasive treatments for optimal results. LED being at the top. These are extraordinary times to be in the wellness skincare world!
