L’Oréal USA continues to double down on its sustainability efforts at a time when consumers have made ingredient transparency top of mind. Its Garnier brand has become the first mass-market skin-care label to achieve Cradle to Cradle certification for five items its SkinActive line, according to the company.“Garnier’s mission is to develop naturally inspired beauty products that are good for you and good for the planet. This certification is very important because it helps validate our tremendous achievements in sustainable product development,” said Anncy Rowe, senior vice president of marketing for Garnier. “We are very much looking forward to working with our retailers to educate consumers about the certification, and most of all, Garnier’s commitment to bringing ingredient transparency and naturally derived beauty to the skin-care aisle.”Produced in its facility in Franklin, N.J., the Garnier items earning the Cradle to Cradle Silver recognition include: Garnier SkinActive Deep Pore Facial Cleanser with Green Tea; Garnier SkinActive Refreshing Facial Cleanser with Aloe Juice; Garnier SkinActive Soothing Cleansing Milk with Rose Water; Garnier SkinActive Deep Pore Exfoliating Face Scrub with Green Tea; and Garnier SkinActive Refreshing Cream Cleanser with Aloe Juice.Garnier is L’Oréal USA’s third brand to receive the certification as the company digs deep into its commitment to sustainability. The others are Biolage and Kiehl’s. The certifcation is based on an evaluation of material health, material reutilization, renewable energy and carbon management, water stewardship and social fairness practices. The certifications are the result of L’Oréal USA’s global commitment to innovate, produce and develop sustainably through its global sustainability program called Sharing Beauty With All.“The Cradle to Cradle certification is a multiattribute certification that mirrors L’Oréal USA’s holistic approach to sustainable product development,” said Danielle Azoulay, head of CSR and Sustainability for L’Oréal USA. “We know our consumers value sustainability and to us that means demonstrating sustainability leadership across the value chain, from formulation to manufacturing to renewable resources to social fairness.”The announcement was made in conjunction with the Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute and MBDC, the creators of the Cradle to Cradle Design Framework and assessors of L’Oréal products, during this year’s Sustainable Brands conference in Vancouver, B.C. Cradle to Cradle Certification products are awarded at five levels: Basic, Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum.“As the biggest beauty company in the world, we have the opportunity to leverage our scale to make a positive impact, which drives L’Oréal’s sustainability efforts every day,” said Azoulay. “Consumers today are also using their buying power to align with brands that share their values. This means the work we are doing not only has positive environmental and social impacts but it also benefits the business.”
