Fetch your fanciest loose leaf and crank the kettle – coz according to new research, a daily cuppa is the key to a long life.
The Tea Advisory panel reviewed more than 40 studies on health benefits that go hand-in-hand with a hot brew.
They found that four to five cups of black or great tea is the magic number for improving cardiovascular function, lowering blood pressure and reducing the risk of heart attack and stroke. In addition, both varieties significantly reduce levels of the LDL cholesterol that’s associated with cardiovascular disease, with those at highest risk seeing the greatest results.
Impressive? You bet. But in addition, tea may be the answer to all your productivity probs.
Several studies established that regular tea drinkers experience increased cognitive function and less memory decline later in life. In one Dutch study back in 2011, black tea drinkers showed enhanced accuracy in attention tests and higher levels of alertness in comparison to those who were given a placebo bev.
“Being the second most widely consumed beverage in the world after water, tea is a relevant contributor to our daily cognitive function,” the authors concluded.
And if you needed another excuse to dunk the bag again, tea also acts as a natural source of fluoride and helps keep our breath fresh and teeth cavity free.
“There has been a large body of anecdotal and observational evidence suggesting tea protects against heart disease, but our review of the latest studies and trials confirms there is a clear benefit,” Dr Chris Etheridge, the review’s co-author added.
