A retired business manager had life-changing surgery on his nose after it swelled to three times its normal size.
Geoff Turner, 72, from Llandudno, suffered from the skin disorder rhinophyma, which turned his nose into a bulbous mass with lumps growing out of the front and sides.
The disorder also obscured his vision, affected his breathing and left him battling depression.
Mr Turner said: ‘It was horrendous. I was very self-conscious and quite depressed about it. Every time I went for a meal I’d be surrounded by people who looked quite normal while I had a huge nose.’
After medication and creams failed to improve his appearance, Mr Turner was forced to go under the knife and is thrilled with his ‘perfect’ new nose.
He said: ‘I feel like a totally different person. I feel 100 per cent better about myself.’

WHAT IS RHINOPHYMA?
Rhinophyma is a progressive skin condition that affects the nose.
It most commonly affects people with rosacea, with their noses becoming redder, swollen at the ends and bumpy.
Rhinophyma occurs due to the formation of scar-like tissue, as well as the glands that produce oil on the skin enlarging.
It is not genetic or linked to alcohol.
There is no cure.
Oral treatment, such as acne medication, usually does not work but may reduce redness and slow the growth of oil-producing glands.
Surgery is usually required, which involves removes excess tissue by shaving off layers of the skin.
Such procedures can be carried out via a carbon dioxide laser, scalpel excision, dermabrasion or electrical currents.
Bleeding, scarring and permanent colour changes to the skin can be side effects.
People can reduce the appearance of rhinophyma by wearing SPF every day and using gentle, unfragranced soaps and moisturisers.

‘I feel like a totally different person’
Mr Turner, who lives with his 72-year-old partner Andrea, said: ‘After surgery, everything is back to normal again. I feel like a totally different person.
‘I’ve got couple of minor scars but apart from that you’d never know, which is quite simply amazing.
‘I can go out now without worrying about what people are thinking and feel 100 per cent better about myself.’
Mr Tuner started suffering from the skin disorder three years ago.
He said: ‘It kind of creeps up on you and you don’t realise something’s happening.
‘Over time, I started to think it was getting out of hand as it’d got so much bigger.
After trying medication and lotions with nothing working, Mr Turner was left with no choice but to go under the knife.
Speaking of the results, Mr Turner said: ‘It’s amazing the difference it has made. I have a perfect nose again! It’s a fantastic feeling and I’m over the moon.’

He has praised his surgeon Professor Fahmy (pictured) for the ‘amazing difference’
‘Its removal is a big boost to restore self-confidence’
Speaking of rhinophyma, Professor Fahmy, who performed Mr Turner’s surgery at the private Spire Yale Hospital, Wrexham, said: ‘This swelling is because there is formation of scar-like tissue and the sebaceous glands (which produce oil on the skin) get bigger. Luckily, it isn’t common.
‘Not only can the appearance be a cause of embarrassment but the bulbous nose can affect breathing if it blocks the nasal openings.
‘Although this is a benign growth, it has a huge impact on the facial appearance particularly because it affects the nose and the centre of the face. Its removal is a big boost to restore self-confidence and avoid potential breathing difficulties.
‘It’s a very gratifying outcome for the patient and very rewarding for the surgeon to be able to make someone feel better about themselves.’
