Meghan Markle is Prince Harry’s girlfriend, but most people still don’t know much about her other than the fact that she stars on the USA drama Suits. That’s because, even though things are reportedly serious between Meghan and Harry, she’s stayed silent about her relationship—until now
Meghan is on the cover of the October issue of Vanity Fair and, in the interview, she gets pretty candid about dating the prince. “I can tell you that at the end of the day I think it’s really simple,” Meghan told the magazine. “We’re two people who are really happy and in love.”
Meghan says that she and Harry were “very quietly dating” for six months “before it became news.” Harry publicly confirmed in November that he and Meghan were dating in a statement which slammed the racist and sexist abuse she faced after their relationship was revealed.
“Prince Harry is worried about Ms. Markle’s safety and is deeply disappointed that he has not been able to protect her,” Harry’s communications secretary said in the statement. “It is not right that a few months into a relationship with him that Ms. Markle should be subjected to such a storm. He knows commentators will say this is ‘the price she has to pay’ and that ‘this is all part of the game.’ He strongly disagrees. This is not a game—it is her life and his.”
Meghan now says the only thing that changed after her relationship was revealed was how she was perceived. “Nothing about me changed,” she said. “I’m still the same person that I am, and I’ve never defined myself by my relationship.”
Meghan, who didn’t address rumours that she and Harry recently got engaged during a trip to Botswana, says that dating a royal is definitely difficult at times. “It has its challenges, and it comes in waves—some days it can feel more challenging than others,” she said. “And right out of the gate it was surprising the way things changed. But I still have this support system all around me, and, of course, my boyfriend’s support.”
However, Meghan says she doesn’t read any of the things that are written about her. “I haven’t even read press for Suits. The people who are close to me anchor me in knowing who I am. The rest is noise.”
Meghan says she totally gets that people will want to know more about her relationship and, at some point, they might reveal more. But for now, they’re just enjoying each other. “We’re a couple. We’re in love,” she said. “I’m sure there will be a time when we will have to come forward and present ourselves and have stories to tell, but I hope what people will understand is that this is our time. This is for us. It’s part of what makes it so special, that it’s just ours. But we’re happy. Personally, I love a great love story.”
